Mary J Blige My Life II: The Journey Continues, Act I

Mary J. performed on the American Music Award on November 20, 2011 she sung “Mr. Wrong” from her My Life II: The Journey Continues, Act I album released on November 21, 2011. Mary J’s performance was outstanding, toward the end of the song a picture of Heavy D appeared on the screen to behind her when the song ended she thanked the audience and said “Rest in peace to my dear friend, my love one, my brother: the lovable and great Heavy D,” Mary said with emotion “I miss you so much, brother” as she turn and walked off the stage. This was so emotional, for all of you who don’t know Heavy D had a big part in helping Mary J. with her music career. I like Mary J’s album My Life II: The Journey Continues, Act I, especially the songs 25/8, No Condition, Empty Prayers, Need Someone, Mr. Wrong (featuring Drake), Love A Woman featuring BeyoncĂ© is a pretty song, you would not think that the two of them would put together a songs like this. Mary J. has other artist featured on songs, Mary J’s ex-boyfriend Nas is featured on “Feel Inside” and Busta Rhymes is featured on the song “Next Level.” Busta Rhymes really took this song to the next level I can hear this song being played in the clubs. Rick Ross is featured on “Why”. I must say the Queen of R&B/Hip Hop is back doing her thing. You can listen to songs from this album on Streetwise Radio.

Eric Roberson

.

It is amazing that there are artist out there that you don’t get to hear because there not played on the radio stations. I came across this artist Eric Roberson his debut album “The Esoteric Movement” was released in 2001. I can’t believe I have never heard of him before I really like his music. Eric Roberson was born on September 25, 1976 and raised in Rahway, New Jersey. Eric was destine to become some kind of artist; he grew up in a musical family. When Eric was 5 years old he would tag along with his older sister while she took voice lessons. Eric was interested in acting, while in high school he performed in two musicals “Grease” and “The Tap Dance kid.” When Eric was 16 years old, he won a scholarship to Howard University in Washington DC, where he studied theatre. Eric landed a deal with EMI label as a songwriter and collaborated with some of R&B and Soul artist like Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild. The years between 2003 and 2007  Eric has released five neo-soul albums and has had some critically acclaimed artist featured on his albums the likes of Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem DeVaughn, Algebra Blessett, and Lalah Hathaway, Eric got the nickname Erro from his peers. I really like all of Eric’s music it has that funky jazzy soul sound, he tells a story when he sings. My favorite songs are “Still”, “Rain On My Parade”, from his The Esoteric Movement album. “Just A Dream” is another beautiful song. It is a shame that Eric Roberson does not get more air play on traditional radio, maybe I would have heard of this amazing artist along time ago. Eric has a new album due to be released November 1, 2011 called “Mr. Nice Guy“, if it is like any of his other albums I can’t wait to hear it. You can hear Eric Roberson music on .

Kenya

Kenya is originally from New York, but she calls Oakland bay area her home now. Like most R & B/ Hip Hop artist Kenya started off singing in church and doing solo performances. Kenya was shy about sing outside of church, but she was asked to sing for school plays and shows. Different artists would approach her to sing background on their records. Kenya came on the R & B/ Hip Hop music scene about seven years ago. Kenya has sung on background and opened up for many popular artists, like Jill Scott, Queen Latifah, Black Eyed Peas,  Montell Jordan, Mary J Blige, Aaliyah, JaggedEdge, Mya, Jodeci, Kell Price, Ledisi, SWV, Mint Condition, Next, 112,Latoya London, Goapele and Brian McKnight, who is one of my all time favorite male singers. Kenya gained her confidence singing and recording with the various artists.  She decided to step out from the background to launch her solo career. Kenya is considered a triple threat in the music industry. Kenya Co-produces her tracks, writes and arranges her songs and dances. I really like the song ‘Memory Lane’ it has that Hip Hop and R & B sound that has a message and you can dance to it. I like Kenya as a singer, she can sing. I think Kenya has the talent to be a force in the music industry. Kenya has a fan base in the Oakland bay area, I know they can’t wait for her debut album, neither can I; Kenya is working on her debut album called ‘Reflections’ due out soon.

Jill Scott The Light of the Sun

Jill Scott new album The Light of the Sun will be released on June 21,
2011. The single So In Love (featuring Anthony Hamilton) one of my
favorite male singers is soulful. It’s the kind of song you can listen to
sitting in the park playing dominoes, on a road trip or being playing at a
wedding. Jill Scott has other artists featured on this album. The song
‘Shame’ features Eve & The Group this is a funky dance tune. Jill Scott
has Doug E. Fresh beat boxing on ’All Cried Out Redux’. Rapper Paul Wall
is featured on ’So Gone (What My Mind Says)’. The other songs I really
like are Blessed, Womanifesto and Hear My Call. I think Jill Scott may
have a hit album, tune in to Streetwise Radio on June 21, 2011, to hear

Gil Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949-May 27, 2011)

Gil Scott Heron known for his spoken word,  passed away on May 27, 2011.
The songs that Gill Scott Heron sung about were social and political songs of the 1970s and 1980s. One of the songs I remember is “The Bottle” my parents would play that song often that was one of my favorites. The people who influenced Gill Scott Heron were singers and political activists Richie Havens, John Coltrane, Otis Redding, Jose Feliciano, Billie Holiday, Langston Hughes Malcolm X, Huey Newton, Nina Simone and pianist Brian Jackson. Gill Scott Heron was known in many circles as the Godfather of rap and as one of founding fathers. He is also considered the founder of political rap. The song “Message to the Messengers” was a plea for the new generation of rappers to speak for change and not to spread the current social situation. In 1990s Gil Scott Heron said in an interview, “They need to study music. I played in several bands before I began my career as a poet. There’s a big difference between putting words over some music, and blending those same words into the music. There’s not a lot of humor. They use a lot of slang and colloquialisms, and you don’t really see inside the person. Instead, you just get a lot or posturing.” I think he is so right, some of these rappers are singing about cars woman or talking mess about each other saying nothing relevant about today’s issues. Three of my favorite rappers who rap about social political issues are Chuck D from Public Enemy, Ermine and Lupe Fiasco. In his later years Gill Scott heron had some issues with drugs and the law. From 2001 to 2007 he was sentenced to one to three years for possession of cocaine in New York and violating his parole. Gil Scott Heron disclosed in an interview with the New York Magazine in 2008 that he was HIV positive, but the cause of his death has not been announced. Gill Scott Heron was a Poet, Musician and Author he had a unique voice and will be missed.

MINT CONDITION

Mint Condition is an R&B male soul group that I have liked since they came out in the 1980’s. In 1991Mint Condition’s “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)” from the Meant to be Mint album stayed on the charts for 34 weeks making R&B top 5 and the Pop top 10 this is one of my favorites.
Mint Condition just kept on putting out hits. In 1993 From the Mint Factory album had three hits single “U Send Me Swingin”, “Someone to Love” and “So Fine” these songs made it to the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs
Chart. Just when I thought Mint Condition would not top “Breakin My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes) they did “What Kind Of Man Would I Be”? from the Definition of a Band album released in 1996 was a hit. It made it to the number two R&B chart and number seven on the Pop chart; it stayed on the
R&B charts for 41 weeks. Mint Condition has been around since the 1980’s that is due to them having all the original members except for keyboardist Keri Lewis. Mint Condition is celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band
this year. “7” is Mint Conditions new album released on April 5th 2011 featuring hit single “Caught My Eye” and also “Not My Daddy” collaboration with Kelly Price. I am so excited that Mint Condition is still bringing their fans the hits. With their R&B, Funk, Latin, Jamaican and Jazz sound.
You can hear Mint Condition on Streetwise Radio.

Jae Franklin "Always Nedded You" Now Playing on Streetwise Radio

Jae Franklin embodies nearly the entire spectrum of soul
music, from Jazz to Afrobeat to Electronic Soul. Her soft and
sweet voice captivates fans quicker than her passionate and
moving lyricism. Seeking a range like Rachelle Ferrell, charm
like Sade, and a mind like Quincy Jones and Sting, Jae
exquisitely showcases her passion for music in each minute
of every performance and every song she writes.
Currently living in Atlanta, Jae is an international songstress that is continuously fusing her artistry with issues in today’s world. Through her global travels and research, she creatively merges the act of art for the sake of art and art for the sake of activism by using some of the most politically active records and tying them in with lyrics that represent a lot of social issues. She wants to push the boundaries and set a standard of how to successfully produce soul music while keeping her artistic integrity.
The Houston-native began singing at an early age, like many well-known artists, in the church choir. Although she took piano lessons and voice lessons, Jae decided early-on she wanted to focus on singing. She attended High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, excelling in the study of voice and
theory. Jae was active at HSPVA, joining various choirs, ensembles and the theatrical group the Young Performers.
Working with the likes of award-winning songwriter and producer Bryan Michael Cox, composer Louis St.
Louis of the movie Grease, and songwriters and production teams for Tyler Perry, Donnell Jones and
Tamar Davis, Jae Franklin hopes to further expand so that her music can reach all walks of life. This is by
far one of the best years, which has given her the most imperative resources, musical direction, and spiritual guidance she has ever had. There isn’t a moment that passes in her life when she doesn’t think about how her music will affect the world.
Her calling is her passion. Her passion is her music. Follow her while her music plays through the
greatest moments of her life…

El DeBarge He's Back

El DeBargeCover of El DeBargeI was watching the BET Awards in June 2010 El DeBarge was on there singing “All This Love”, “I Like It”, “Time Will Reveal” and “The Rhythm Of The Night.” It was so good to hear and see El DeBarge; he has been away for far too long. El DeBarge has had a drug problem for the last 25 year of his life. El was arrested for cocaine possession and given probation in 2001. In 2006 he was arrested again for possession of a controlled substance and again he was given probation. El DeBarge was on a serious downward spiral, in 2007 he was arrested for domestic dispute but the charges were later dropped. That same year he was arrested for possession of cocaine and once again he was put on probation. In 2008 El DeBarge was arrested for possession of crack and drug paraphernalia. This last possession charge, he was sent to federal prison for two year. This is what he needed to get his life back on track and give his fans his beautiful music. El DeBarge was released in October 2009 and he is back.
El DeBarge came out with a new album out called “Second Chance” in 2010.
This album was nominated for two Grammy awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. El DeBarge still has the voice; we all fell in love with when he was with DeBarge. I am praying for you El DeBarge and I know all your other fans are too. Tune in to Streetwise Radio and listen to Second Chance by El DeBarge.

KANDI

The first time I heard of Kandi Burruss was in 2009, when she was on the Real Housewives of Atlanta. I did not realize she was a former member of Xscape, a female R&B group in the 1990s. Kandi is a singer-songwriter and
record producer. Kandi’s song writing skill as earned her an award as the first African-American women ever to win ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year award in 2000.

In 1999 Kandi wrote songs for TLC “No Scrubs” which we all know won all kind of rewards. After that Kandi was on a roll, she wrote three more hits for Destiny’s Child’s second album “The Writing’s on the Wall”, “Bills, Bills, Bills” and “Bug A Boo”. Kandi kept going she wrote “There You Go”
for newcomer Pink. Kandi’s writing credits grew, she wrote for artist like Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, Boyz II Men, Da Brat, N-Toon, NSYNC, Solo, Usher, Fantasia, Mya, Joe, MC Lyte and Whitney Houston.

In 2009 I heard a song Kandi wrote “Fly Above” on a episode of the Real Housewives of Atlanta. I was not feeling the way she sung the song, but the lyrics had a good message. I can relate to the 1st verse so well, “I am so comfortable in the skin I'm in, I'm secure about who I am, so you go ahead and talk all you wanna, I built up a shell and it's hard as
armor. It seems like every step I take up, drama comes along with the bread I cake up. But you ain't doing nothin if you don't have haters, so I welcome you to do what's in your nature.”

Kandi has a new album out called Kandi Koated it was released on December 2010 the lead single “Leave U” debuted 89th on the Billboard’s Hot
R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. You can listen to this album on Streetwise Radio.
Kandi is a talented songwriter; I hope her solo career goes just as well.

CHARLIE WILSON

Uncle CharlieImage via Wikipedia

The first time I met Charlie Wilson, was in the early 80’s. He was visiting our church,   The Church of The Living God. If I remember right,
I believe he was the Pastors cousin.  Charlie Wilson was with The Gap Band at that time. He invited all the young adults to the Gap Band concert at the Oakland Coliseum it was ten of us. The Gap Band was one of the hot funk bands at that time, the concert was outstanding. Now known as “Uncle Charlie” the name given to him by Snoop Dogg, has over come drug addition, homelessness and prostate cancer. I am so happy he did because would not have his great songs since his comeback. Songs like “Charlie Last Name Wilson” which stayed on the Adult R&B charts for six
weeks and nine weeks with the single “There Goes My Baby,” I love both of these songs. Uncle Charlie Wilson just keeps on giving his fans great music “Just Charlie” his third solo album the song on this album “You Are” is climbing the charts to number one on the Adult R&B charts. I am predicting that will be his crossover song. I can see people of all nationalities using this as a theme song at their weddings and anniversaries.Uncle Charlie Wilson appeals to the younger generation as well they know him from being on songs with Kanye West, Lil Kim, Snoop Dogg, T-Pain and
Justin Timberlake. Uncle Charlie Wilson has reinvented his self to stand the test of time, he knows how blend the old school with the new school music of today. Uncle Charlie Wilson in my opinion is one of the great singer songwriters of our time. I pray he is around for years to come, giving all his fans his beautiful music.

In Remembrance of Teena Marie
By Shelah Moody
Photo of Teena Marie and Shelah Moody by Carmelita Harris

"Beautiful ones, gone on to soon, where did you go, back to the moon, to the stars where angels host, and  to the one who loves you most…talking ‘bout eternity” --Teena Marie, “Makavelli Never Lied,” from the 2004 album, “La Dona.”
On Dec. 26, the music world lost one of its finest voices, Mary Christine Brockert, also known as Teena Marie. She was 54, gone too soon. She was found by her beloved teenage daughter, Alia Rose, whose birthday is Dec. 25, Christmas Day.
It was indeed a sad day for her fans around the world.
I’ve always felt bonded with Teena Marie through her music. I first heard Teena Marie’s mellifluous soprano voice on the radio while visiting my grandmother in Marin County, CA as a teenager.
Since I knew so little about Teena Marie’s personal life (other than she was a white woman who sang like a black woman and was embraced by the African American community), was able to focus intently on the quality of her artistry and production.
When I first heard “Square Biz,” in 1981, I was hooked. I would sit by the radio for hours listening to KSOL on lazy summer afternoons waiting for “Square Biz” to come on so that I could make my own mixed (cassette) tapes. .
I loved “Square Biz,” the joyful, boisterous, syncopated rhyme, which earned Teena Marie the title as the first successful female rapper. I realized that Teena Marie was giving us the straight talk—the 'square biz' of who she was all about and I identified with her as a person. Like myself, Teena Marie was into poets Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou and jazz artist Sarah Vaughn. She even liked one of my favorite foods, hot water cornbread! I did not know what a “cat daddy” was back then, but I know now! (According to the Urban Dictionary, a cat daddy is dude over 55 who can still 'get it'! ha ha).
My cousins and I would hold competitions as to who could remember all of the words to “Square Biz.” When she sang her ballad “Portuguese Love,” literally 'blowing the song out of the water; I yearned to sail off to distant lands.
Ironically, Teena Marie died in Pasadena, CA, the city where I was born.
For Teena Marie, soul was an inborn concept. She grew up in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles, four blocks from a predominantly black community dubbed 'Venice Harlem' which was the inspiration behind many of her songs. She played piano, percussion and guitar and began singing professionally at age 8. Marie’s early musical education came from the Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra recordings her parents played at home. While attending Catholic school, Marie studied classical artists such as Schubert and Mozart. She remembers being riveted to a hallway locker after hearing Al Green's voice on the radio for the first time in high school.
In her early 20s, Marie landed a job at Motown Records, where she met her friend, lover and mentor, Rick James, who wrote and produced her debut album, "Wild and Peaceful," in 1979.
In 2005, I had the pleasure of interviewing Teena Marie over the telephone while on staff at the “San Francisco Chronicle,” soon after the release of her Grammy nominated album, “La Dona” dropped. Marie was scheduled to appear at the Eighth Annual KBLX Stone Soul Picnic, featuring the Gap Band, the Whispers, Angie Stone and Ledesi, at Cal State East Bay , Pioneer Amphitheater in Hayward , CA .
Our interview also took place in several months after Rick James died in 2004. Rick James and Teena Marie's steamy duet "Fire and Desire," from James' 1981 "Street Songs" album, is still one of her most popular songs. Although Marie and James broke up in the early '80s, they remained friends.
Marie’s emotions were bittersweet at the time. She found comfort in Alia Rose.
"I've been up and down," said Marie.  "I'm getting better as the days go by. But sometimes, I still have real bad days. We were very close, and Rick was a part of my life for a long time. So, I'm sure I'm gonna have my bad days for quite a while. Basically, I've always been a very happy person. I have a wonderful daughter, and life goes on."
Marie, has influenced a new generation of artists including Nicki Minaj, Ledisi, Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill and the Fugees, who sampled her ballad "Ooo la la La" on their 1996 hit "Fu- Gee-La." Marie took pride in her mentorship role. Alia Rose, aka Rose LeBeau, appeared in a duet with her mother on the track “ Milk N' Honey” on Marie’s final album, “ Congo Square ” recorded in 2009. Like mother like daughter, Alia Rose demonstrated some of Marie’s  legendary jazz sensibility and rapping skills.            Marie was so open and down to earth during our phone conversation that at some point, I suggested that she and dancehall  DJ Sean Paul (who is part Portuguese) might consider  a remix of “Portuguese Love.”
“That’s a good idea,” she said. “You know? That’s a really good idea!”
After our interview, Marie invited me to come back stage at the Stone Soul Picnic and say "hello" in person. I told her I would bring her a gift, since her music meant so much to me.
“No, honey, just bring yourself,” she said.
Although members of the media have dubbed her the Ivory Queen of Soul. I do not like that title, 'cause I believe that soul transcends the boundaries of race and ethnicity.
When I saw Marie perform live for the first time at Pioneer Amphitheater, I discovered that she was also a girl who rocked, playing the guitar on many of her tracks including “I Need Your Lovin” and “Behind the Groove” and stepping out in the audience (with security in tow) to serenade them with her elegant cover of “If I Were a Bell.” Her beloved Alia Rose always stood in the wings watching her perform and almost serving as he mother’s protector and guardian.
During our interview, Marie, a regular on the Stone Soul Picnic circuit, reflected on her experience performing in the Bay Area as well as her musical ministry.
"The Bay Area, to me, is the same as Philly,” said Marie. “It's just exciting to see smiling faces. You hear certain music and it reminds you of certain times. I think that God put me on Earth to bring a lot of people together through music and to let them know that you don't have to be a certain color to sing a certain way. You can be a black woman and sing opera like Marion Anderson. It's just really about feeling and spirit and soul. I've been able to project mine and make people happy. That was my destiny, I believe."

AFROSOLO THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

San Francisco’s award-winning AfroSolo Theatre Company proudly presents Harmony & Melody: A Celebration of Black History, February 25-26, 2011. Harmony & Melody: A Celebration of Black History will feature the extraordinary bass baritone vocalist Lawrence Beamen (of “America’s Got Talent” fame), performing Negro Spirituals and traditional African American music in collaboration with The Gold Coast Chamber Players (GCCP).
Harmony & Melody… was conceived by Beamen and GCCP’s founder and artistic director Pamela Freund-Striplen to use music as a bridge towards racial and cultural unity, peace and understanding.
“We are very excited to host this concert”, said Thomas Robert Simpson, founder and Artistic Director of the AfroSolo,  “it fits perfectly with our desire of using the arts to explore the bonds that unite all people.  We also view the arts as a vehicle to promote dialogue and healing, especially in wake of the Tucson shooting,” he added.
In addition to the Negro Spirituals, the GCCP will also perform “Panamanian Dances for String Quartet” (1953) by William Grant Still, one of the most important African-American composers of the 20th Century, and the “American” Quartet by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, who was deeply influenced by African-American Spirituals and by his friendship with one of the earliest  African-American arrangers of religious music and  prolific composer Harry T. Burleigh.
Beamen, a Walnut Creek resident, is a critically celebrated vocalist.  He was asked to sing for Rosa Parks at an NAACP event honoring the civil rights leader.  He has performed for numerous dignitaries, including former President Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul II.  In 2009, Beamen was one of four finalist to compete on NBC's hit show “America's Got Talent” Season 4, where his powerful rendition of "Ole Man River" (from Show Boat) was critically acclaimed.  Beamen’s theater credentials include the roles of deckhand Joe in Show Boat (2007) and Coalhouse Walker in Ragtime: The Musical (2006), and he was honored with Bay Area Critics Circle nominations for both of these roles.  Recently he performed at a ceremony honoring the great African-American singer and activist Paul Robeson presented by the Eugene O’Neill Foundation.   Robeson had a powerful influence on Beamen as a singer.  Dr. Alvin McLean will accompany him on piano.
