I am shocked. Amazed. Astonished. Dumbfounded. How have I not ever heard of this R&B singer/songwriter, Jesse Boykins III? I constantly ask myself this question every single time that powerful beat of his, trickles down my ear canal. But just recently I’ve been introduced to his music and boy can I say, that now, I am so happy to have his music in my life. Jesse Boykins III dropped his new album, Bartholomew, this year in late July, which I also found myself listening to over and over again. He started producing albums in 2008, where he released his first album, The Beauty Created. I have yet to check out his other albums, but I definitely know what I’ll be doing this week. And If you like R&B/Soul jams this album will leave you wanting more. What I like the most about this album is all the surprises. Some songs will have you bopping your head and tapping your feet as soon as that first beat drops. Whether it’s the funky beats, dancey vibes, smooth instrumental hip-hop, or those soul jams, the chill of Bartholomew is like food to the your ears. You can’t live without. The rough but chill intro “Earth girls” does a great job of preparing us for the R&B rollercoaster ride Jesse Boykins III has strapped us into. But believe me when I say this is a ride worth waiting in line for. Songs like “Everybody Shut up,” “Into You,” “I Need you,” and “Tomorrow,” just to name a few, are perfect examples of the shifts in styles he presents. Not to high not too deep, this singer-songwriter voice is also something to be amazed by. It’s a shame this artist is very underrated but if his past albums are any good as Bartholomew, I’m sure this artist is one you should be on the lookout for. Bartholomew is truly an amazing album. Now I may be overselling it a bit but my ears just can’t stay away. So, check it out for yourself and you may find yourself glued to this album like I am.

Aretha Franklin schedules Oakland concert, first Bay Area show in 30 years

Legendary vocal diva Aretha Franklin, who is famously afraid of flying, will be performing her first show in the Bay Area since the 1980s when she plays Oakland's Oracle Arena on August 10. According to a press release, tickets for the show start at $42.50 and go on sale on Friday, March 13.

Franklin's shows will feature an A-list opening act in R&B producer and singer Babyface. The concert will support the Queen of Soul's latest album, Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, which features covers of Adele's “Rolling in the Deep,” Sinead O'Connor's “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Etta James' “At Last” and Gladys Knight's “Midnight Train to Georgia.”

The Oakland concert is her third on the West Coast planned for the month of August, following shows in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara earlier in the week. Expect more dates to be announced in the future, since it would make sense for Franklin to perform as many shows as possible while she's out there.

Though Franklin refuses to fly, she does travel around the country frequently via bus. A few years ago, when there was speculation that she could become a judge on American Idol, Franklin insisted that she could take the gig despite her refusal to fly. “I’ve been to California from Detroit four times this year and Florida,” she said at the time. “I go wherever I choose to go comfortably on my custom bus.”

Franklin has performed at the Grammys and other functions in Los Angeles many times over the years, so she doesn't seem to have a problem getting around in America. She did miss out on an opportunity to perform at Queen Elizabeth's 50th Jubilee years ago because she wouldn't fly to England.

Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics was the singer's highest-charting album since 1985's Who's Zoomin' Who? Her remake of “Rolling in the Deep” reached the Top 50 on the R&B chart, giving Franklin her 100th career hit on that survey, the most ever among female artists. The dance remix of that track went all the way to No. 1, marking her first chart-topper on that countdown in 16 years.

Franklin has always been a great live performer and has made a remarkable comeback since her unspecified illness in 2010 had some tabloid outlets reporting that she was near death. She came back with a strong performance the next year at the Chicago Theatre, firmly establishing that she was back at the top of her game.

New Album from Brooklyn Soul Group THE REVELATIONS  The Cost of Living set for release April 29th First single "Why When Love is Gone" available now as free download The Revelations are set to release their fourth studio recording entitled The Cost of Living (Decision/Red River/Sony RED Music) on April 29th.  The new record displays the Brooklyn, NY band's trademark postmodern take on the classic soul/blues/rock sound, something The New York Times' Jon Pareles called "old fashioned soul songs for twenty-first century hard times." BIOGRAPHY

Shantel Robinson was born on November 16, 1990 and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. She attended Hydel Preparatory and Immaculate Conception High Schools. She is currently a student at the University of Technology, Jamaica where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and majoring in Finance and Banking.

Shantel Robinson recently released her debut single “Just Tell Me Now” in July 2013, and looking forward to release more singles soon. Her genres are Pop, R&B and Freestyle music. She commenced singing at the age of 4 and was a “Choir Leader” at Hydel Preparatory School and was given the honour to sing a solo-part as a “soprano singer” at the “Hydel’s Anniversary Celebration” and she was also a member of the church choir.

Shantel has always wanted to become a recording artiste and songwriter from she was in preparatory school but her mother kept telling her to complete her education first; then she can pursue her dream. She has a passion for singing and she thinks this is the time for her to pursue same and give it her best. Shantel has written all her songs and her inspiration comes from singers like Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, Beyonce and Rihanna.

During her years in Preparatory and High schools, she began participating in tracks at the age of 8 years and accomplished medals and trophies at both the “JISA Inter-Prep. Championship” and the “Boys and Girls’ Track and Field Championship”. She was a former class two Champion Girl, Deputy Captain, Class Monitor, Prefect, Runner-Up Sports Girl, Runner-Up All-Round Girl and Sports Girl of the year.

After she graduated from high school, she competed in the “Caribbean Model Search Competition 2010” at Pulse Modelling Agency and was a finalist that same year and participated in Pulse’s “Talent Bikini Show” singing Christina Aguilera’s song “Beautiful”. She was one of the models on the Reality Television Show (Season 1) “Mission Catwalk 2011” and modelled in various “Fashion Shows” by walking the runway for local and overseas fashion designers.

Mishon Ratliff

I remember seeing Mishon Ratliff on the television show Lincoln Heights in 2007. I was watching an episode and he was singing, I thought this guy man can sing. Well this 20 year old actor, dancer, musician and singer from Los Angeles California, has a single out called “Older Girl”. This song will have the Cougars jumping out of their skin. I had no idea that he had out put three mix-tapes and was doing his thing as a singer. The three mix-tapes are “The Homecoming” in 2010, “Introducing Yung Hustle” in 2011 and “The Gift” in 2013. Mishon had four singles that did well on the R&B charts they were “Break You Off”, “You're The One”, “Excuse Me Mama” and “Turn It Up” I like all of them. Keni Burke

I grew up in the era of the true soul singer and the real deal R&B musicians. Keni Burke happens to be one of those singer musicians. Keni Burke’s music is the kind of music you would hear back in at the day. You would go to a party or club and just dance and have fun with your peeps. This 59 year old singer, songwriter, record producer, pianist, keyboardist and bass guitarist used to be a member of the Five Stairsteps a group from Chicago, Illinois. The groups biggest hit was and still one of my all-time favorite songs "O-o-h Child". In 1977, he released his self-titled debut album, which featured the songs "Keep on Singing", "Shuffle", and "From Me to You". This talented artist was so underrated. Keni Burke has put his skills as a guitarist and bassist to work. He has played with some major artist of our time like, Sly & the Family Stone, Natalie Cole, Billy Preston, Terry Callier, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, Dusty Springfield, Diana Ross, and Gladys Knight. I like Keni Burke’s music it is feel good music it has a mix of R&B, soul, funk, jazz, Smooth Jazz. Marcus Canty

When I first heard Marcus Canty on American Idol in 2007 he was great and was only 16. Even though the judges cut him, I knew he was going to be remarkable. What the heck were the judges thinking? Apparently they don’t have an ear for good music. After all they cut Jennifer Hudson. Marcus was born in Bowie, Maryland on January 22, 1991. This 22 year old R&B, soul singer, dancer and musician can hold his own with the best of them. Marcus was influences by some great singers like Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Boys II Men Mary J. Blige, Monica, Bobby Brown, and Whitney Houston. His song “Won't Make A Fool Out Of You” was in the movie Think Like A Man. His debut album “This…Is Marcus Canty” was released in 2013. Yes, he can sing some songs that I put on my playlist. They  are “User By You”, “Won't Make A Fool Out Of You”, “Tonight”, “Three Words”, “Stay In Love”, “Don’t Pass Me By” and In Out. Streetwise Radio is playing songs from Marcus Canty’s album “This…Is Marcus Canty”. I think he did a great job. Listening to Streetwise Radio I’ve come across some underrated artists that should be played on the on-air stations and are not. Willie is so underrated in my opinion he should be one of those artist. This sexy 32 year old R&B singer from Harvey, Illinois can deliver a sensual song. He should be right up there with some of the artist he collaborated with like Avant, Joe, Ginuwine and Jagged Edge. I’ve never heard of him until Streetwise Radio. Before he became known to some, he sang with a Chicago based group called “Kwiet Storm”. After 10 years with this group he went solo in 2006. He gained notoriety from being on MTV’s Making the Band 4 in 2007. Streetwise Radio is playing the song “Morning” his 2012 single. Willie Taylor is definitely an R&B singer that sings strictly for grown folks. If your young and appreciate good music you will like him too. Soulpersona

After hearing Soulpersona’s songs “Flying Easy” and “Life Time” on Streetwise Radio I had to know where this artist came from. Soulpersona is from North London. He is a talented musician, producer and arranger. He got his first big break in 2002 from his supporter and good friend Jocelyn Brown. Soulpersona has worked with some soulful artists around the world such as Darien, Sibel Thrasher, RAMP (Roy Ayers Music Production) Deborah Jordan, Replife, Kia Bennett ( D’angelo backing vocalist), Oliver Cheatham and Princess Freesia. He has also worked as musical director for Leon Ware, Jean Carne, The Valentine Brothers, The Jones Girls and his Digisoul Band. What I like about Soulpersona is the lady’s he has featured on is songs have voices that compliment his music. All three of his albums “Soulcoaster”, “The Remixes” and “The Lapdancer” were skillfully produced. Some of my favorite songs are "Weightless (featuring Deborah Jordan)”, “Alright (featuring Replife & Princess Freesia)”, "So Natural (featuring Kia Bennett)”, "Girl's Gotta Get Her Lovin", "Ava's Fantasy", “Flying Easy (featuring Deborah Jordan)” and “Lifetime”. Loose Ends

This group was bumping in the clubs back in the day “Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)” was the jam. Loose Ends were from London and achieved success in the 1970’s in the U.K. By 1981 they signed with Virgin Records and crossed the pond. They were the first British Band to top the U.S Billboard Chart. I think this was the start of R&B groups and artists from the U.K. really invading the U.S. The original members consist of vocalist and guitarist Carl McIntosh, vocalist Jane Eugene, and keyboard player, writer and founder Steve Nichol. Jane Eugene and Steve Nichol left the group in 1989, bringing an end to the band's most popular phase. They had several hit songs when they broke up “Slow Down”, "Watching You (Watching Me)", “Hangin’ on a String (Comtemplating)”. Carl McIntosh currently performs under the name 'Loose Ends Experience' or 'Loose Ends'. All you had to do was put on a Loose Ends song and the party was on. If they had not split up, I wonder would they be as successful today.

Adriana Evans

I’ve been listening to Adriana Evans song “Suddenly” on Streetwise Radio. She reminds me of the late great Phyllis Hyman. This amazing talent is a native Californian, born and raised in San Francisco. Adriana has singing in her blood. Her mother Mary Stalling sang with some jazz greats Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and her godfather jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. That would have been incredible growing up around all that talent. Adriana debut album self-title was released in 1997. She was so dissatisfied with the music industry in the United States. She went to Brazil for a while and didn’t record for seven years. When she did decide to record she released an album called “Nomadic” this album had various genres of music, especially African music. Adriana released 3 more albums “Kismet” in 2005, “El Camino” in 2007 and “Walking With the Night” in 2010. She is so underrated. Artists like her need to receive air play instead of some of this crap their playing on the on-air radio stations. Thank God for internet radio. My favorite songs are “Love Me On The One”, “Let You Get Away”, “Suddenly”, “Waiting”, “Never Thought”, “Blue Bird” and “Undercover”. I really like Jacob Banks. This 20 something year old from Birmingham, Britain is a true soul singer and storyteller. His song “Worthy” is a beautiful. Jacob Banks album “The Monologue” was released in early 2013 it is awe-inspiring. This album has so much feeling. My Favorite songs are “Worthy” “Homecoming”, “Hostage”, “Rainy Day”, “Something Beautiful” and “Dear Simone”. Austin Brown

What can I say about Austin Brown? Talented! It’s in his blood. Austin is the youngest son of Rebbie Brown-Jackson from the musical Jackson family. Austin has a little bit of Michael and Janet influence, but he has his own sound. I listened to his mix tape while writing this and I must say I like it. This multi-talented singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, dancer and record producer has what it takes to be a star. Those family genes are strong. Keep doing your thing Austin Brown. Some of my favorite songs by Austin are “All I Need”, “Target Practice”, “Menage A Trois”, “Remember” and “Groove 92”. Alexis Spight

I think great singers come from singing in church. It is just something about the way they deliver a song that moves me. Well Alexis Spight happens to be one of those singers. I saw her on “Sunday Best” a television gospel singing contest in 2012. No it is not like American Idol. Contestants are judged on the true singing ability not what they look like. I watch her go up against some great gospel singers of all ages. In the finale it was between the two teenagers Alexis Spight 19 and Joshua Rogers 18. Joshua Rogers won it was the first time in the history of “Sunday Best” that a male won since it began in 2007. Well this native from Buffalo, NY was 1^st runner up she definitely did her thing. Alexis is the daughter of a preacher she honed her skills by singing in church. Alexis has the vocal ability, unique style and apparent genuineness that will take her far in her music. I heard the song “Steady” on Streetwise Radio. When I saw that it was Alexis Spight I was so pleased to know that this amazing young talent had an album out called “L.O.L.: Living Out Loud”. Alexis will take a gospel song and turn it into something wonderful to hear. It will make you want to get on your feet. Brandon Hines

This R&B crooner with a pleasant tenor voice sings love songs. Brandon Hines is from the Detroit Michigan, I like is style he reminds me of a young Brian McKnight. Brandon is an intelligent young brother he took is knowledge of social networking and promoted his first album “Love Music:Fallin in Fallin” while he was at Howard University. Through the student body, he sold over 10,0000 copies which gained him a fan base. Brandon left school and decided to peruse his music career. He went to New York City hooked up with some heavy hitters in the music industry such as Trey Songz, J. Cole, R. Kelly, Ryan Leslie and Troy Taylor. When he went on tour with Estelle’s American Boy tour his fan grew through MySpace and YouTube. His song “Fire” was on the movie sound track “Think Like a Man”. Brandon Hines is an artist that is underrated, but I predict we will be hearing from a lot him. Rob McCoy “Waiting For You”

Who is Rob McCoy? He is an R&B singer who is an underrated artist with a gift for writing song and singing them remarkably. Some people have a natural gift and know it at an early age Rob is one of them. Rob grew up in Patterson, New Jersey singing in the church choir and for his family. Rob said “All my life I've been told what I wasn't capable of doing, but I knew I'd make sure to prove those who discredited me”. It is really remarkable to see a young brother now days to have a dream and have the courage to go for it. While listening to Rob McCoy’s songs, he has the talent of a Neo and Chris Brown. Rob McCoy has two songs that I really like “Waiting For You” and” Good Die Young”. No matter whether Rob’s singing songs he wrote or doing covers of other artists his voice is amazing. Joy Denalane

One word that describes Joy Denalane, Fantastic! This South African/German singer-songwriter mixes African folk music, Soul, R&B with English and German lyrics and makes amazing music. No matter whether she is singing in English, German or African folk music Joy Denalane has a whole lot of soul. Joy Denalane was born Joy Maureen Denalane on June 11, 1973 in Berlin-Schöneberg Germany but grew up in Kreuzberg Germany. Joy knew what she wanted at an early age. She left home when she was 16 years old to pursue a music career. Joy joined the Reggae and Soul bands Culture Roots and Family Affair. Joy was 19 when she signed with a major pop label, but that didn’t work out because they did not know how to market her type of music. Joy really became known on the music scene in 2002 in Europe with her debut album “Mamani”. Joy went on a solo tour in 2003. Joy has received several awards a Comet award for “Best Hip-Hop/R&B National” and three ECHO award nominations, including “Best Female Artist”. Her 2006 second album “Born & Raised” is my favorite. The song “Born & Raised” the title song of the album is about her life. It has that old school feel. This album is so soulful! Joy has Lupe Fiasco, Raekwon, and Governor featured on this album. Joy has also worked with other artist like Tweet, Dwele and Bilal. Joy Denalane has been around for some years and I have never heard of her. When I first heard Joy Denalane was on December 27, 2012. She was playing on Streetwise Radio and the song was “Be Real”. I looked her up and was listening to her. I had to write on her, so other people could experience her wonderful talent. Larry Graham and GCS Raise Up

Larry Graham’s first solo album was in 1998’s “GCS 2000”. On October 1, 2012 Larry Graham legendary bassist is back after 14 years with his second solo album “Raise Up”.  Graham was the deep-voiced bass player for the funky Sly and the Family Stone band in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. After that he formed Graham Central Station, releasing a string of successful albums throughout the remainder of the ‘70s. In the 80s as a solo artist he had an R&B chart-topper “One in a Million You”.  Larry Graham’s “Raise Up” album was produced by Prince. Graham and Prince have shared a longstanding personal and professional relationship.  This album has Graham bringing the funk with “Throw-N-Down the Funk.” This tune features full slap bass the Larry Graham famous sound.  Graham has Price singing and playing on “Raise Up”, “Shoulda Woulda Coulda”  and “Movin”. Raphael Saadiq is featured on “One Day”. My favorite tunes on this album are “Throw - N - Down The Funk”,  “It's Alright”,  “Welcome 2 Our World”, “It Ain't No Fun To Me”, “No Way”, “Hold You Close” and “Now Do U Wanta Dance”. For all you Larry Graham fans I give this album gets 4 out of 5 stars.  Larry Graham is one of the masters, of Funk! This album is good music to ride with.
