#MuteRKelley

#Metoo #TimesUP #OMG have you had enough of the hash tags yet? Lol some you readers and listeners are in the ‘know’ but for those who live a busy life I will give you the 411. In the wake of the recent Hollywood sexual scandals many social media movements were created to combat sexual assault and the immodest treatment of women in general. In today’s postindustrial days the millennials use # or “hash tags” to generate a buzz around a general slogan. It’s basically an easy way for people on the internet to find a cause or a movement.
Now that you have the basics I can explain the #MuteRKelley title.
Spotify music which is a digital music platform has decided to change its policies on which artists they plan to promote on its platform. Spotify’s new policy focuses on “hate content” and “hateful conduct. Now don’t ask me how or who will be the judge but this is gonna get crazy. So with that being said Spotify has decided to drop R Kelley from its automated playlists and has decided to scale back any promotion of the artist. Apple music has followed in suit and has ceased promotion of R Kelley’s music on some featured playlists. As we all know and expect the rest of the major digital outlets to jump on the bandwagon and create similar policies. As R Kelley has been in the news as of recent and whether he’s guilty or not women need to feel comfortable, safe, and empowered. It’s our job as a people to work together to achieve a level of equilibrium amongst each other. I feel it’s great that we can come together socially as a people and take a stand against issues that stain the fabric of what makes America great….. Diversity Creativity Ingenuity Raw Unfiltered Flashy Brash Caring Innovating. That’s why many people are on the fence about “censorship” of artists who will decide what is accepted and what isn’t??? But we do know one thing in light of the #MuteRKelley  Spotify and other large music outlets are not going to be silent about the content that is played on the platform. Although you can still find R Kelley’s entire platform in the libraries of the streaming service… lol  #imGone

Remembering Rod Temperton of Musical Group Heatwave

                                                               Rod Temperton

I want to ask you. Do you remember where you were when you first heard the song ‘Boogie Nights’ by Heatwave? I sure do. It was Saturday night and I was at Studio 47 in San Jose, California. I remember the club had two sides to it. One side was for 21 years or older and the other side was for 16 to 20 years. I was on the 16 to 20 year side and couldn’t wait to get on the other side. The guys looked better. The next day I went to Eastridge Mall in San Jose the and bought the album ‘Too Hot to Handle’. That was my intro to this funk/disco band of the 70s and 80s.

Well one of the creative remembers of Heatwave, Rod Temperton died in late September of 2016 at the age of 66. He was a phenomenal songwriter and keyboardist. This English man from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, wrote or had his hand in most of the hits for Heatwave. Songs like Boogie Nights, Always and Forever, Groove Line, Mind Blowing Decisions and Ain't No Half Steppin. Temperton not only wrote hits for Heatwave. He started working with the one and only Michael Jackson in 1978 and wrote Thriller, Off the Wall, Baby Be Mine, The Lady in My Life, Rock With You and Burn This Disco Out. Temperton amazing talent will be missed but never forgotten. I know when I hear any of the songs he wrote, I will definitely smile. R.I.P

Jody Watley and Shalamar--Reloaded

I want to thank God for creating me in 1960, so I can enjoy real talent. By that, I mean music artists that could sing and write lyrics with meaning, unlike the some of the artists nowadays who auto tune their voices to make it sound audible. Whenever I hear "Second Time Around,” "For the Lover in You" and "A Night to Remember,” it takes me back to 1979, 1980 and 1982--the years of my young adult life. I remember Jody Watley and Howard Hewett singing these songs, OMG!  their voices. Good ole voices from a good ole times. Music that still lives and plays on and in the hearts of many.

Well enough of all that, this blog is about Jody Watley. Did you know she used to dance on “Soul Train” in the 70s when she was 14 years old? She also sang in the group Shalamar from 1977 to 1983. When Shalamar broke up, I was sad because the musical chemistry was so good. During Watley’s solo career she put out nine albums from 1987 to 2006. Now at the age of 56,  she’s still doing what she loves. In May of 2014 she registered the Shalamar trademark. This was a big controversy with Howard Hewett, you can read all about it in this link http://jodywatley.net/. Watley is now singing and booking shows with Shalamar reloaded with Nate Allen Smith and Rosero McCoy. They have a single out called “Slow Dance,” which I have listened to many times and still love it. I have always been a fan of Shalamar but for me it was Watley who made the group and of course the one who had an incredibly successful solo career (including Grammys). Watley not only looks amazing, she still has it. I look forward to the new album. Jody Watley and Shalamar reloaded will be playing Yoshi’s in Oakland California on December 30, 2015 thru January 1, 2016 and SAP Center in San Jose on February 12, 2016.

Marcus Canty

When I first heard Marcus Canty on American Idol in 2007 he was great and was only 16. Even though the judges cut him, I knew he was going to be remarkable. What the heck were the judges thinking? Apparently they don’t have an ear for good music. After all they cut Jennifer Hudson. Marcus was born in Bowie, Maryland on January 22, 1991. This 22 year old R&B, soul singer, dancer and musician can hold his own with the best of them. Marcus was influences by some great singers like Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Boys II Men Mary J. Blige, Monica, Bobby Brown, and Whitney Houston. His song “Won't Make A Fool Out Of You” was in the movie Think Like A Man. His debut album “This…Is Marcus Canty” was released in 2013. Yes, he can sing some songs that I put on my playlist. They  are “User By You”, “Won't Make A Fool Out Of You”, “Tonight”, “Three Words”, “Stay In Love”, “Don’t Pass Me By” and In Out. Streetwise Radio is playing songs from Marcus Canty’s album “This…Is Marcus Canty”. I think he did a great job. I hope on his next album he uses more live musicians because he was fantastic on American Idol. You can listen to Streetwise Radio on MyGen365, Live365, Athena365, iTunes and Pandora.

Loose Ends

This group was bumping in the clubs back in the day “Hangin' on a String (Contemplating)” was the jam. Loose Ends were from London and achieved success in the 1970’s in the U.K. By 1981 they signed with Virgin Records and crossed the pond. They were the first British Band to top the U.S Billboard Chart. I think this was the start of R&B groups and artists from the U.K. really invading the U.S. The original members consist of vocalist and guitarist Carl McIntosh, vocalist Jane Eugene, and keyboard player, writer and founder Steve Nichol. Jane Eugene and Steve Nichol left the group in 1989, bringing an end to the band's most popular phase. They had several hit songs when they broke up “Slow Down”, "Watching You (Watching Me)", “Hangin’ on a String (Comtemplating)”. Carl McIntosh currently performs under the name 'Loose Ends Experience' or 'Loose Ends'. All you had to do was put on a Loose Ends song and the party was on. If they had not split up, I wonder would they be as successful today.

Adriana Evans

I’ve been listening to Adriana Evans song “Suddenly” on Streetwise Radio. She reminds me of the late great Phyllis Hyman. This amazing talent is a native Californian, born and raised in San Francisco. Adriana has singing in her blood. Her mother Mary Stalling sang with some jazz greats Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie and her godfather jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. That would have been incredible growing up around all that talent. Adriana debut album self-title was released in 1997. She was so dissatisfied with the music industry in the United States. She went to Brazil for a while and didn’t record for seven years. When she did decide to record she released an album called “Nomadic” this album had various genres of music, especially African music. Adriana released 3 more albums “Kismet” in 2005, “El Camino” in 2007 and “Walking With the Night” in 2010. She is so underrated. Artists like her need to receive air play instead of some of this crap their playing on the on-air radio stations. Thank God for internet radio. My favorite songs are “Love Me On The One”, “Let You Get Away”, “Suddenly”, “Waiting”, “Never Thought”, “Blue Bird” and “Undercover”. Listen to Adrina on Streetwise Radio, Live365,Athena365,MyGen365,iTunes,Pandora.
